fruit heartDiet has a significant effect in the development of dental caries. Yet the role that food plays in systemic inflammation and subsequent tooth loss has not been extensively examined, even though 46% of adults in the United States have periodontitis, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Using data from the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a multi-university research team assessed dietary inflammatory potential using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), a composite measure based on the association between nutrients and systemic pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.

Subjects in the highest quartile of the DII, indicating a pro-inflammatory diet, had lost an average of 0.84 more teeth than those in the lowest quartile of the DII, indicating an anti-inflammatory diet. The researchers concluded that an anti-inflammatory diet could be associated with fewer missing teeth.

Georgios A. Kotsakis, DDS, MS, of the University of Washington School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics recently shared his insights about the study with Dentistry Today.

Q: Oral inflammation often is attributed to bacterial factors and infection. How does diet fit into its mechanics?

A: We know very well that dental caries are largely attributed to cariogenic dietary habits, with carbohydrate-rich diets being a key modifiable risk factor for disease prevention. The effect that dietary habits have on tooth loss is such that a diet restricting fermentable carbohydrates (eg, simple sugars and complex carbohydrates) can prevent caries. Nonetheless, little information was available on the effect of diet on periodontitis.

Oral health touches every aspect of our lives but is often taken for granted. Your mouth is a window into the health of your body. It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Systemic diseases, those that affect the entire body, may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems.

Differences in the uptake of multiple toxic and essential elements during the second and third trimesters and early postnatal periods are associated with the risk of developing autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), according to researchers from the Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Environmental Health Sciences Laboratory and the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai, who used baby teeth in their work.

The critical developmental windows for the observed discrepancies varied for each element, suggesting that systemic dysregulation of environmental pollutants and dietary elements may serve an important role in ASD. In addition to identifying specific environmental factors that influence risk, the study pinpointed developmental time periods when elemental dysregulation poses the biggest risk for autism later in life.

While the genetic components of ASDs have been intensely studied, specific environmental factors and the stages of life when such exposures may have the biggest impact on the risk of developing autism are poorly understood. Previous research has linked fetal and early childhood exposure to toxic metals and deficiencies of nutritional elements with several adverse developmental outcomes, including intellectual disability and language, attentional, and behavioral problems.

dementia

(Reuters Health) – People who keep their teeth and gums healthy with regular brushing may have a lower risk of developing dementia later in life, according to a new study.

Researchers who followed close to 5,500 elderly people over an 18-year period, found those who reported brushing their teeth less than once a day were up to 65 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed daily.

“Not only does the state of your mind predict what kind of oral health habits you practice, it may be that your oral health habits influence whether or not you get dementia,” said Annlia Paganini-Hill, who led the study at the University of California.

Inflammation stoked by gum disease-related bacteria is implicated in a host of conditions including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

And some studies have found that people with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, have more gum disease-related bacteria in their brains than a person without Alzheimer’s, said Paganini-Hill.

It’s thought that gum disease bacteria might get into the brain causing inflammation and brain damage, she told Reuters Health.

Think back to the “dark days” of dental school. Somewhere buried in the curriculum of prosthodontics, restorative, orthodontics, and periodontics, there was some mention of oral pathology. Apparently, since you would be spending your career looking into the mouths of your patients, you needed some instruction on the inspection and diagnosis of a variety of lesions of the oral cavity.

During your coursework you undoubtedly learned about leukoplakia and erythroplakia, as well as the possibility that some of these lesions might progress to oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). You were taught that any ulcer that did not heal, erythroplakia, or suspicious appearing leukoplakia warranted a biopsy to rule out an early cancer.

EU, mercury fillings

The Europmercury fillingsean Parliament has adopted legislation that will restrict the use of mercury, further closing the gap between existing European Union legislation and the 2012 United Nations Minamata Convention against mercury pollution. The legislation will phase out the use of mercury in dental amalgam by 2030.

“Mercury is acutely toxic and is one of the 10 most damaging naturally occurring substances on the planet. Fetuses, newborns, and children are the most vulnerable group, since in the growth phase the brain and the nervous system react very sensitively to mercury,” said Member of Parliament Stefan Eck of Germany.

“The researchers note that nicotine is a known contributor to gum disease, but e-cigarette flavoring appeared to exacerbate the cell damage caused by e-cigarette vapor, with menthol-flavored vapor posing the most harm.

While further research is needed to investigate the long-term effects of e-cigarette use, Rahman and team believe their findings indicate that the devices may have negative implications for oral health.”
